Professional Stump Grinding Throughout Charleston and the Lowcountry

A stump left behind after a tree removal isn’t just an eyesore — it’s something you have to mow around, trip over, or landscape awkwardly to hide. Salvation Land Management provides professional stump grinding in Charleston, Johns Island, and the surrounding Lowcountry, whether it’s a single stump from a recent tree removal or multiple old stumps that have been sitting on the property for years.

Our stump grinders handle stumps of all sizes, from smaller ornamental trees and mid-size pines to wide, tangled root systems beneath mature Live Oaks. We grind the stump and major surface roots several inches below grade, then backfill the area and rake it smooth. The difference between a yard that’s ready for sod or landscaping and one that’s left with a hole comes down to how the stump grinding and cleanup are handled.

Many of our stump grinding services are part of a larger property project — clearing space for new landscaping, finishing up after a tree removal, or reclaiming an overgrown property. For larger projects, our forestry mulching and land clearing services can handle surrounding vegetation, brush, trees, and site cleanup so you don’t have to coordinate multiple contractors.

Frequently Asked Questions About Stump Grinding

How much does stump grinding cost in Charleston?
Cost comes down to the stump's diameter and how tangled the root system is. Stumps under 12 inches typically average $100–$150, while massive stumps — think a 3-foot oak — can run $300–$500 or more. We give a clear, on-site price before any grinding starts, so there's no guessing.
How deep do you grind the stumps?
Most stumps get ground 6 to 12 inches below the soil line, which is deep enough to clear the root collar and get you below where a mower blade or a shovel would ever reach. Larger stumps with wide root flares — mature Live Oaks especially — sometimes need a deeper pass to fully clear the visible roots.
What happens to all the wood chips?
Grinding a stump produces a good amount of wood chips and shredded root material. By default, we use that material to backfill the hole and rake the area level, so you're not left with a depression in the yard. If you'd rather we haul the chips away, or leave extra for use as mulch elsewhere on the property, just let us know before we start.
Can you grind stumps right next to a fence or my house?
Yes. We run narrow-access grinders that fit through a standard backyard gate and maneuver in tight spots without tearing up turf or damaging fencing, siding, or hardscaping. If a stump is close enough to a structure or utility line that it needs extra care, we'll walk you through the plan before we start grinding.
Will the tree grow back after the stump is ground?
Grinding removes the stump and the surface roots, but it doesn't kill the root system underground — those roots are still alive and will slowly break down over time. Most species won't send up new growth once the stump is gone, but a few common Lowcountry trees, like crepe myrtle, maple, and sweetgum, can sprout new shoots from leftover roots if conditions are right. If that happens, cutting the sprouts back as they appear (or a targeted herbicide treatment) will exhaust the root system within a season or two. Pines almost never resprout after grinding.
