Professional Tree Trimming & Pruning in Charleston, SC

Trees that are never pruned don’t stay healthy on their own. Deadwood builds up, weak limbs get heavier every season, and crossing branches rub against each other and invite rot. Salvation Land Management provides professional tree trimming and pruning throughout Charleston, Johns Island, Mount Pleasant, and the surrounding Lowcountry. Our ISA Certified Arborists maintain mature Live Oaks, crape myrtles, pines, and other Lowcountry trees while helping residential and commercial property owners address dead, damaged, or overgrown branches.

Our ISA Certified Arborists prune according to International Society of Arboriculture standards, making clean cuts just outside the branch collar so the wound closes properly. Depending on the tree, our tree pruning services may include deadwood removal, crown thinning, canopy lifting, structural pruning, and selective trimming. We don’t use climbing spikes on healthy trees or unnecessarily top trees—our goal is to improve tree health, structure, clearance, and safety without compromising the natural canopy.

Pruning is also an opportunity to identify problems before they become more serious. If we find a dead limb, weak union, storm damage, or a tree that may no longer be safe to retain, our arborists can evaluate the situation and determine the appropriate next step. If a tree needs to come down rather than be trimmed, our tree removal services can handle the job safely and complete the cleanup.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tree Pruning

How much does tree pruning cost in Charleston?
Cost depends on the tree's size, how many trees need work, and how complex the job is. Small ornamental trees typically run $150–$400, medium trees run $400–$800, and large mature oaks that need a bucket truck or climbing can run $800–$1,500 or more. We give a firm, on-site estimate before any cutting starts.
When is the best time of year to trim trees in South Carolina?
For most trees, late winter — while they're dormant — is the best window. Cuts heal faster before the growing season starts, and insects and disease are far less active. Live Oaks and other oaks are worth pruning specifically between November and February, since oak wilt spreads more easily through fresh cuts during the warmer months. Spring-flowering trees and shrubs are the exception — prune those right after they bloom, or you'll cut off next year's flowers. None of that applies to dead, damaged, or hazardous limbs — those come off whenever we find them, regardless of season.
What is the difference between tree trimming and tree pruning?
The terms get used interchangeably, but they're not quite the same job. Trimming is generally about shape and size — cutting back growth to keep a tree tidy or within a certain footprint. Pruning is more deliberate: removing specific branches for the tree's health, structure, or safety, like deadwood, crossing limbs, or weak co-dominant stems. In practice, most of what we do is pruning — every cut has a reason behind it, not just a look we're going for.
Can trimming or pruning damage my trees?
Done wrong, yes. Topping, over-thinning a canopy, cutting flush against the trunk instead of at the branch collar, or pruning oaks in the wrong season can all cause lasting damage — slow healing, rot, disease, or a tree that never grows back the way it should. That's exactly why technique matters as much as equipment. We prune to ISA standards, which is also what keeps a tree healthy for years afterward.
Do you offer emergency branch removal?
Yes. If a storm drops a limb on your roof, driveway, or power line, or a branch is hanging and ready to fall, we can get a crew out to remove it safely. If the rest of the tree needs pruning — or needs to come down entirely — we can handle that in the same visit.
